The Miller Family Lectures with Nicholas Kristof

We are pleased to welcome two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author Nicholas Kristof for TWO events this March! 

On March 4, 2026, Kristof will be at the Mauthe Center, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, to discuss his latest book, Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life. 

On March 5, Kristof will be speaking in the Walter Theatre on the campus of St. Norbert College, on the topic, “Half the Sky at Fifteen: Progress and Setbacks in Women’s Rights.”

On Wednesday, March 4, at 7:00pm, Nicholas Kristof will be at the Mauthe Center, on the campus of UWGB, to discuss and sign copies of his latest book, Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life. 

The book is a candid memoir of Kristof’s career, mostly with The New York Times, as he witnessed and wrote about century-defining events: the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, the Yemeni civil war, the Darfur genocide in Sudan, and the wave of addiction and despair that swept through a broad swath of working-class America. Kristof has continually exposed regimes and groups violating basic human rights, and the book recounts some of the hair-raising risks he took to do so.

This event is the latest in our Shirlyn Miller Lecture in Human Rights and Public Understanding. Through the generosity of her daughter Susan Nuetzel, this series honors the life and work of Shirlyn Miller, who passed away in October 2025 at the age of 103. Shirlyn, married to Norman Miller for 65 years, was well known and much loved in the Green Bay community for her many contributions to human flourishing and public understanding.

On Thursday, March 5, at 7:00pm, Nicholas Kristof will be at the Walter Theatre, on the campus of St. Norbert College, for a lecture titled, “Half the Sky at Fifteen: Progress and Setbacks in Women’s Rights.” 

Fifteen years ago, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Nicholas Kristof co-authored, with Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a landmark book that exposed how the oppression of women and girls is one of the greatest moral challenges of our time—and how grassroots movements around the world are creating change. The book inspired readers to see women’s rights as human rights and sparked global conversations about forced prostitution, genital mutilation, and access to education. In this Miller Lecture, Kristof looks back at Half the Sky and explores what has changed since its publication in 2009. Where have we seen progress? Where do setbacks still persist? Join us for an evening of reflection, storytelling, and hope for the future of women and girls worldwide.

This event, hosted by the Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding, is this year’s Norman and Louis Miller Lecture in Public Understanding. Established in 1993 by the Norman Miller Family Foundation to honor the life of Louis Miller, this series promotes unity, communication and tolerance among different cultures, religions, ethnicities and traditions. When he passed away in 2008, Norman's name was added to the title of the lecture series.

About Nicholas Kristof

How good do you really have to be, to be christened the reporter’s reporter...by other reporters? You have to be Nicholas Kristof – good. After working in France, Kristof began backpacking in Africa and Asia, writing articles to cover his expenses. He has since lived on four continents, reported on six, and traveled to more than 150 countries. During his travels, he has caught malaria, experienced wars, confronted warlords, encountered an Indonesian mob

carrying heads on pikes, and survived an African airplane crash. Kristof not only managed to survive and press on, he also won two Pulitzers in the process – advocating human rights and speaking on behalf of those who have been victimized and oppressed.

In 1990 Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, then also a New York Times journalist, became the first husband-wife team to win a Pulitzer Prize for journalism for their coverage of China’s Tiananmen Square democracy movement. Kristof won his second Pulitzer in 2006 for what the judges called “his graphic, deeply reported columns that, at personal risk, focused attention on genocide in Darfur and that gave voice to the voiceless in other parts of the world.” Kristof and WuDunn have written five best-selling books: Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope, Half the Sky, A Path Appears, China Wakes, and Thunder from the East. Oprah Winfrey devoted two full programs to their work, and they have been on countless other television programs. Half the Sky and A Path Appears each inspired a prime-time PBS documentary series. Kristof’s newest book is a memoir entitled: Chasing Hope: A Reporter’s Life.

After joining The New York Times in 1984, Kristof served as a correspondent in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Tokyo. He has covered presidential politics, interviewed everyone from President Obama to Iranian President Ahmadinejad, and was the first blogger on The New York Times website. A documentary about him, “Reporter,” executive-produced by Ben Affleck, aired on HBO, and he has millions of followers on Twitter, Facebook and Google+. Kristof has won innumerable awards including the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Anne Frank Award and the Fred Cuny Award for Prevention of Armed Conflict. He also serves on the board of Harvard University and the Association of American Rhodes Scholars.

Jeffrey Toobin of CNN, his Harvard classmate, said of Kristof: "I’m not surprised to see him emerge as the moral conscience of our generation of journalists.
